Commercial Driver; Class A
Class A CDL Employee Drivers are a vital part of our operation as we most often use full size tractor trailers to transport goods OTR (over the road) or long distance. A Class A CDL Driver may be hired to perform interstate or OTR long haul work, which would require them to be away from home for a week or more at a time. Or they may work locally moving around larger equipment and bringing trailers to residence for loading, allowing them to be home daily.
Overall responsibilities include driving (which is essential to this job role), maintaining your Class A license including required physicals and random drug screening, monitoring equipment, leading a moving crew, managing the move by being the main point of contact on site with the customer, directing and working with the crew to pack, load and deliver, and communicating with dispatch and operations.
In the household goods industry, a Class A CDL Driver is a hands-on position. There are physical and administrative tasks to perform in addition to driving. How hands-on a Class A Driver is depending on whether they are performing more local, short haul, or long-haul runs. A Class A long haul driver spends more time driving, managing, and handling the customer. A local Class A Driver may perform more physical work, if working locally. In the household goods industry, a Driver is rarely 100% “no-touch”. However, their primary role is driving, overseeing the move process, handling the customer, communicating with the office and labor.
Class A CDL Drivers are individuals who have earned their commercial driver’s license, which allows them to operate any vehicle with a semi-trailer or trailer with two or more axles. This also includes any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 26,000 lbs. (provided that the GVWR of the towed vehicle is more than 10,000 pounds.)
Driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) requires a higher level of knowledge, experience, skills, and physical abilities than what is required to drive a non-commercial vehicle. To obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), an applicant must pass both skills and knowledge testing geared to these higher standards. Additionally, CDL holders are held to a higher standard when operating any type of motor vehicle on public roads. Serious traffic violations committed by a CDL holder can affect their ability to maintain their CDL certification.
